Activity for Unit 2 from Melissa Vargas, RPHS: Here is an activity I am using today. I have had a lot of success with it. Their homework last night was to set a budget for rent, and to list what amenities they would want in an apartment. We have also watched 4 videos in class about the different neighborhoods in Madrid, and they had to pick one of those to live in. I’ll attach a link to one of the videos so you can see what they are about. Then, today in class we are exploring a website called www.fotocasa.es and they are choosing a place to live. There are about 8 videos total (I think – we only watched 4 because at the time I only had found 4), and they are only about 1 min. 30 sec. long. The kids really looked forward to them each day, and it was a great way to build up to the activity in the computer lab on Friday. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptsC5J1N8GM

Project from Ruth Jeffery, Dulles. Portions of the requirements of this project could serve as a performance assessment, with the project serving as a separate grade. Here is a note from Ruth as to how she uses this project:
Regarding the Unit 2 Spanish Project
In U2 I give two major grades. One is the U2 district assessment and the other is the Spain project. The logic behind it is this: If you were going to go somewhere to live for a year one of the things you would do- probably the most important thing besides packing and purchasing tickets – is to learn about the place you are going to visit. Our authentic experience in Spanish 3 is a YEAR in SPAIN. I find that teaching and talking about the festivals, regions, and geography of the country not only increases the students’ vocabulary; it creates anticipation for the year to come. This project is not students reading prepared speeches off of cue cards. Students bring in tomatoes and grapes to demonstrate the festivals in Valencia and La Rioja, they perform simulated bullfights and sing songs in Catalan. It is an amazing display of creativity as well as use of the language.
